Intimate Colorado Weddings

“An intimate elopement,” they said. “How many guests are you anticipating?” “Only about 35.” When I was growing up and all my friends were getting married an elopement meant you ran away and got married without any witnesses, or maybe the couple who were traveling with you! Everything changes with time, including word definitions. As a wedding officiant in Western Colorado I have come to appreciate intimate Colorado weddings. photo by KPierce Some couples choose an audience of 150 for their ceremonies, some 50, some 10 and some only themselves and me. I am equally comfortable with it all and…

Colorado Mountain Weddings

Is getting married daring? Or is it daring to have a Colorado mountain wedding?   Our jeep driver of San Juan Scenic Jeep Tours in Ouray, Colorado took just knew how to make the it look scary in the photo!  We actually felt quite safe with him driving. This sweet Midwest couple just wanted to be amid the wildflowers in the mountains for their ceremony.  Greg (the owner of SJSJT) gave them so much more than that!  As we traversed the road up Yankee Boy Basin he pointed out things we might not have otherwise seen and explained much about…

What Really Matters-according to a Western Slope wedding officiant

The mountains were on fire, the air filled with smoke.  How was this Western Slope wedding officiant to get there? A friend offered to drive me over a treacherous mountain pass. It was a fairly small family wedding at a beautiful mountain lodge with amazing views, albeit smokey. The entire family was from MN and we were in CO.  The parents and a grandmother were staying at a town down the road with the fire now blocking the passage in between.  They had come to the lodge the night before the wedding for the festivities.  Forced to spend the night,…

Before You Get Married in Colorado

Before you get married in Colorado or anywhere, as a wedding officiant and communication coach... I recommend you both ponder these questions individually, then make a sacred time, or times, to have a dialogue.  Be painfully honest, yet compassionate. If your partner did not change much at all over the years (from how they are now)  would that be okay with you? Are you able to say what you really feel and/or think about anything to your partner? Can you accept that there are times you do not really like each other, but your love is bigger & deeper than…

A Colorado Wedding NOW?

Do you really want to wait for a Colorado wedding now?  In the Autumn of 2020 I officiated a wedding ceremony for a couple that had planned a large wedding in the summer of 2020 with me as their Western Slope wedding officiant. They put it off in hopes the pandemic would be over soon.   When they realized that no one really knew when it would end, they decided to have a very small outdoor wedding and have a big celebration when it felt safe to do so. Another couple I married in the Summer was posting it live…

Weddings in time of COVID

Wedding while in a pandemic?   Yes you can! I have officiated joyful weddings during these crazy times when no one would think you could have weddings in time of COVID. Many people are postponing their wedding while in a pandemic.  That is understandable if you have your heart set on a large number of people in attendance at your ceremony. However, if you are willing to create a celebration with all of your family and friends when it is safe to do so again, there is no reason not to create a beautiful and memorable ceremony now. You can…

Western Slope Weddings

Western Slope weddings are generally more laid back and tend more toward wilderness settings. Not to say that I have not officiated some large formal weddings in Telluride, Aspen and Vail. And I have officiated weddings in those same places that were small and informal. It does not matter much whether you choose formal/informal, large/small, indoor/outdoor, what matters is what feels right for you, the couple getting married. Some choose to do what pleases their families. Again if pleasing your family is of upmost importance, then do what feels right to you. I have joined families of varied religious backgrounds…

Adventure Weddings in Colorado

A wedding ceremony in a hot air balloon? Yes! What better kind of adventure weddings in Colorado could one ask for with our spectacular mountains all around!   The groom called me and said he and his bride would like to have a conversation with me about their wedding ceremony, but the hot air balloon part was to be a surprise to the bride! So, “keep that part under wraps as we speak together.”   The take off point was an hour and a half from my home and I had to be there at 7 am, so the groom…

Snowy Mountain Wedding Majesty

As a mountain wedding officiant on the Western Slope of Colorado I have performed many ceremonies in not only snow, but once a full on blizzard!  I’m talking outdoors a long way from shelter!! Though I am not a fan of cold weather, I have to say that these were some of the most beautiful mountain weddings I have ever officiated, or seen for that matter. Therefore, if you are a lover of the outdoors and don’t really want to wait until summer to get married in a beautiful location, consider a winter wonderland wedding. There are many places near…
